Description:

Savulak is a predatory pack animal, living in small groups of up to ten creatures. These burrowing lizards prey on livestock and harass homesteaders, although they are rather skittish and can be scared off by loud noises. Savulak are medium-sized creatures that live in underground cave systems. They are mottled tan and sky blue, allowing for decent camouflage in their natural habitat of plains, grasslands, and deserts. They are larger than most lizards, averaging about 100 lbs and 3-5 feet long. They have an intimidating crest of horns and beady eyes with several layers of thin eyelids to protect from wind and sand. Savulak’s front feet look like large paddles tipped with claws to help them dig swiftly through the ground.

Diet:

They eat primarily livestock, bugs, and other, smaller lizards, although they have been known to munch on tough grasses, especially hollow ones that store water during the dry season. They hunt primarily as a pack at dawn and dusk, burrowing underneath their prey and trying to cripple the legs with their powerful jaws. When their prey is dead, they unhinge their jaws like snakes to consume large parts of their kill whole. Once fed, they return to their caves to sleep for days at a time.

Interactions:

Unless hungry or their caves are threatened, Savulak do not often attack. They prefer to keep their distance from humans, especially having learned quickly how dangerous even a lone homesteader can be. They feed about once a week, so settlers who bump into a pack either move on, wipe out the pack, or set up big ground thumpers to scare the lizards off. The ground thumpers take many forms, from congruence-infused columns of metal that hit another plate of metal regularly like clocks to bells to big logs that several people lift and drop each dawn and dusk.

The main thing to fear from Savulak is their fast movement and strong jaws. If they get under a human, they can bite one in half. A starving one is a force to be reckoned with. They will try to dodge attacks, and run away as soon as the fight isn’t going in their favor.

On the surface they run like this
