Bluther Hide

Coming from the Blither Bull native to The Eastern Glades and Shavaúntep Mountains, Blither hide is a sturdy, long lasting material perfect for making tents and outer wear to resist the damper weather. Like other animal hides and leathers, Blither hide is a perfect, renuable fiber that will last generations if treated properly.

Treatment

Blither Hide, like other leathers, is treated at a tannery. Once the hide is deemed usable and the rough edges trimmed up, the flesh is scraped off. After that comes the first semi optional step: soaking the hide in river water. This is where the hair is prepped to be removed if you want it to be removed. The longer the hide soaks, the easier it will be for the hair to be removed.   Either way, then moves on to membraning, where the underside of the hide is meticulously scraped. After that, the hide is squeezed out till soft and damp, then submerged in a watery, nasty mixture of the Bluther Bull's brain, water, and some kind of animal fat or oil. Since the Bluther hide is so incredibly thick and durable, it will take around 4-6 thourogh sumberges before it's ready for the next step; softening the hide. This basically just means moving the hide about in intsensive ways until it dries, the more intensive the softer the result. At the end, the bluther hide is smoked to preserve whatever state it's in after the softening.

Scraped

Scraped Hide is usually more maluable and its used as waterproof coverings and outer layers of clothing when one extra layer of protection is needed.

Fur

While usually thicker, Bluther hide with fur is incredibly durable and warm. It's perfect for rugs, tents, and other less handled items that need some longevity.

Different Uses

Coats

As mentioned before, heavily worked Bluther hide is a wonderful final layer over clothing durring the wetter months. It's naturally water resistant and only gets more flexible with use. The oldest Bluther Hide coats tend to work the best for protection. Typically they are boxy in shape to be adaptable to any body type or height.

Tents

Larger, thicker hides are bound together and woven into a large tarp-like shape. When drapped fur-side out over a wooden frame, the hide works as a very effective cover from weather and light. With the densness and natural protective qualities of Bluther Fur, this temporary structure can weather even the strongest of storms without falling apart, down, or getting anything but stronger.

Binding fibers

During the soaking and trimming step, if the hide is cut into thick or thin strips and dried, the resulting leather is sturdy and maluable, perfect for stitching things together and holding. While it will never be used for smaller details, large, interesting stiches can be used as decoration as well as a binding tool.
