Arcane Traditions
Magic is a vast and complex field of study. For this reason, arcane scholars have devised many practices, known as Arcane Traditions, to make it easier to understand, record, and convey.
The Schools of Magic
To make the study of spells easier, arcane scholars have created categories, known as “Schools”, that spells can be sorted into based on the effects they produce. Some Schools are further divided into "Subjects".
- School of Abjuration - Spells that can negate other magic.
- School of Chronurgy - Spells that can manipulate time.
- School of Conjuration - Spells that can teleport things from one place to another.
- School of Divination - Spells that can acquire knowledge or make predictions.
- School of Enchantment - Spells that can manipulate the minds of creatures.
- School of Evocation - Spells that can manipulate energy.
- School of Graviturgy - Spells that can maipulate the force of gravity.
- School of Illusion - Spells that can fool the senses or minds of creatures.
- School of Necromancy - Spells that can manipulate the forces of life, death, and undeath.
- School of Techromancy - Spells that can manipulate the state of electrical devices.
- School of Transmutation - Spells that can alter the physical state of things.
Arcanus
Arcanus is the language that is used for incantations (verbal components of spells) and is used to record spells in a textual format. For that reason, it is well known and frequently used by those who study the arcane.
Spellbooks
A spellbook is any book that is used to keep a written record of spells in its pages. The one commonality shared by all spellbooks is that the text within is written in Arcanus. For that reason, only those capable of reading Arcanus can learn or even cast the spells that a given spellbook contains.
Wands
A wand is merely a conduit used to amplify the wielder’s magical ability by focusing the innate magic within them. Every wand has two major components that make it up; the shell and the core.
The shell is responsible for the wand's appearance and personality. It is typically made of wood for its magical affinity, but can be made of any rigid material if one so desires.
The core is responsible for the strength of the wand; the stronger the core, the higher level spells it can be used to cast. There are many things that can be used as a core, but the most potent are taken from creatures with strong innate magical abilities.
Staffs
Staffs are similar to wands in terms of their purpose and functionality, but their construction, however, is slightly different. Staffs are much larger, often requiring two hands to wield effectively, and have an additional component that wands do not; the focus.
The focus is responsible for increasing the precision and potency of the spells it is used to cast.
