The Ninth Gate

In place of the door from which the two shady figures emerged, there was nothing but a 9 etched in coal.

The Ninth Gate is a most elusive organisation, if they even are an organisation. While the Abyss is a most secretive environment, few things can truly stay out of sight. Informants are legion, and many entities are in possession of knowledge nobody should. And yet, there is nothing on the Ninth Gate. No book, no matter how occult, makes mention of it, and none of the most ancient being seem to acknowledge its existence. In a world of myths, this group is but a chimera.

Encounters

They do exist. I have yet to find a clue on who they are, but I have encountered them, on multiple occurrences. Since I can rely on no one but myself to find out, I will record my findings on this notebook. I am no fool: there has been mentions of them, by like-minded people. They must have taken great care removing the evidences as well as the whistleblowers that wouldn't stay shut.

Sineus Lyvwood by Rumengol with Magic Set Editor

Sineus, if it is his real name, makes a lot of effort to mimic the manners of an English gentleman, but does so in a defaced fashion. I could tell right away that he is no more British than I am French. I cannot even fathom if he truly is human. Perhaps he just wears the skin of one. He first came to confront me about my... slightly abusive use of The Drowned, asking it back. My refusal angered him, but he did not make a move to force me. I quite pettily drew his face, wishing to rid myself of a bothersome inquisitor. Suffice to say, it did not work, but he then came back to me displeased.
Miss Linda Fairwell, while unassuming, is a far more imposing presence than her companion, who seems to be her subordinate. She was much more open to discussion, despite her apparent might. Just as she left my store, I could not remember a detail of her shifting face.

This encounter left me a strange taste. It felt like I was facing a bureaucratic organisation, sending field agents to regulate what they deem too dangerous. They are not funded by or related to the Crown, as far as I could tell. A foreign power, without a doubt. The far East is a lead, one that is too remote for me to investigate at the moment.

Mages

Could they be mages? Their feats align with the limitless power of those beings. Yet, they do seem to possess limits. Playing a game, maybe. A couple of lunatics with unmatched strength can delude themselves into protectors of the living world. While I can't ignore this option, it is lacking in plausibility.

They sound positively terrifying. I enjoyed the speculation about who they are, and the detail about having no recollection of Linda Fairwell's face!

So many worlds to choose from...
