The Beacons

All advanced technology within most of the 13 United Kingdoms are powered by the beacons, large energy towers powered by magical runes that generate power similar to power plants run on coal, oil, or nuclear power without the ecological harm that burning oil and coal are known for. Despite their power, the reach of these beacons do have limitations. Those living far from a beacon do not have access to its energy forcing them to rely on other sources of power. This includes traditional methods like wood burning, water wheels for hydroelectric power, or smaller-scale magical solutions. The beacons were first built by King Loki Silvermoon of Bellum and the first ever beacon was given to Archangeli as a show of good will between, at the time, two independent nations. His daughter Queen Nora continued his work of connecting the world through the beacons after his passing but was also unable to finish all of them due to her mysterious death in 2128. The last beacon was installed on Tenebris 31, 2118 in what was at the time a prominent colony of Bellum, Umbra. The beacon planned for Neptunea was never completed.

Access/Availability

In capital cities where the beacons are located, access to beacon power is widespread and forms the backbone of daily life. Here, the energy provided by the beacons powers homes, industries, public infrastructure, and advanced technological devices. Major cities with secondary beacons also enjoy significant access to beacon energy, though perhaps not to the same extent as the capitals. These cities benefit from a high standard of living and advanced technology. In contrast, remote and rural areas have limited or no access to beacon power. Residents in these regions rely on alternative sources of energy, such as wood burning, water wheels, and smaller-scale magical solutions. While the basic use of beacon power is widespread in accessible areas, the full potential and strategic applications of beacon energy are closely guarded secrets. The process of crafting and maintaining the magical runes is restricted to a select few mages and artisans, often under the supervision of the state.

Outside of the capital every major city has a secondary beacon, a smaller version of the beacon powered by the mainline beacon through long underground cables.
