The aging hero, Verus Athaera, defeats his nemesis at the price of mortal wounds. As he slumps to die along the banks of the Dain Lake, he has an amazing dream and awakens, fully healed, near an old dilapidated shrine to the lake goddess and is emboldened with a message of her grace and divinity. He takes up residence and maintains and improves on the shrine; all while telling any who will listen of the Celaeno, the Lady of the Lake
