First, there was only Chalax, the Endless Dark. His slumber lasted for millenia in the cold, empty void of the world. Yet in his slumber, he began to dream. He dreamt that he was not alone in the world, that the void was not so empty or so cold, that he would have a hand to hold and a heart to share. Thus, Irmungandr came to be. From Chalax' hope for companionship, a single strand of light appeared in the darkness, taking root and expanding into a massive tree that lit up the empty void, bringing life where there was none before. Chalax awoke to behold the beauty of the Tree of Mater - and closed his eyes again, content to disappear. Yet a part of him remained. Some of the darkness, displeased with the arrival of light and life, clawed at Irmungandr, attempting to devour the Great Tree. She cried out and from her branches buds sprouted forth, giving rise to the Ephor - manifestations of power and reality. Together, they drove back the darkness, imprisoning the Devourer in the lower recesses of the planes. Even now, he continues to claw and howl, cursing all life. Yet life, as always, continues. Even banished from the material plane, the Ephor watch over the planes, executing the will of Irmingandr.-- Exerpt from 'The Creation of the World' by Fredrick Aldorei
