Kobold House
It is unusual to find a fine townhouse, likely belonging to a family of wealthy merchants that has passed it down through the generations, in a sewer. It is even more unusual to find it swarming with tiny dragons. This large house is the headquarters of The Kobold Society, a secret society in The City of Keelford dedicated to integrating their species into human society. However, their most prominent setback in this quest is their immense lack of knowledge of human etiquette. The kobolds of Keelford are infamous for their blunders, but none was so great as the blunder in which the kobolds came to own this house.
For sixty years, the Golures lived in the house, however, in 49 AR, the family was forced to vacate the city due to a terrible scandal (resulting from an exchange of a pair of Severe Scissors), and the house was sold to a Mr Geddum Hallborg, and this is where the Kobolds enter the scene...
Before the Kobolds Came
23 Plaicemeal Road was built in the year 42 AE by the wealthy Golure family. The Golures were not an ancient dynasty of wealthy nobility, but had instead recently come by their money in the trade of arcane commodities. They were, therefore, relatively new to the world of wealth and fortune, and how else to celebrate this newfound status than to build a fine new house? Work began in early spring with the demolition of an abandoned warehouse in the South Docks of the city. Soon, ships and wagons arrived, bearing stone from The Blackwyrm Mountains for the foundations, glass of for the grand windows, and timber from the Northern Provinces for the house's great beams. Through the chill winds of spring, and the storms and sun of summer, builders worked hard, and a great house slowly emerged from the cracked and weathered Keelford roofs around it. In the autumn of 42, the house was complete. It stood proudly overlooking the port, a grand testament to the family's success. It's sweeping slate roof, rising to a sharp point at the top. There were grey-green panels between beams, with said beams held together with huge bolts, the heads sculpted into flowers.
The Rental
It was at this time that Kobolds first made their ventures into human society. They had already learnt a few oddities of 'big people' society, and the one relevant to this story is the concept of 'rentals'. The kobolds had already rented such things as rowboats and wagons from less anti-kobold folk, so they thought that they knew exactly what to do when they heard that a large house was up for rental in the docks. The kobolds had been looking for a house for some time, so they gladly took the owner, Mr Hallborg up on his offer. However, the based on their past experiences, the Kobolds thought that renting a house not only means that you can live in it, but also that you can take it away like a boat or a wagon. Therefore, at night, the kobolds, aided by magic, started to dismantle the building, piece by piece, only to reconstruct it in the sewers, where they didn't have to deal with sunlight. The large number of kobolds managed this in only a week. When in two weeks Geddum returned to check on his tenants, he was furious to discover that the house was gone. He alerted the guards, and, realising their mistake, the kobolds never troubled him again, or put the house back for fear of prosecution. However, every month, either as an apology or to continue the 'rental', a small bag of coins is left at the site on which the house once stood.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
