The Last Key
The Last Key is an artificer item that can be described in any way that you feel would work within your world. To some, it may be a copper-colored blacksmith's puzzle with many moving parts and only one solution. To others, it may be an orb of power made up of whirling cogwheels, interlocked gears, and coils under age-old pressures. This is up to you. The only thing to know is that when a player solves the device's secrets through an INT check or Arcana or even a Tinker check, they and their companions will be teleported to The Artifactorium.
This mystery. This enigma. The Last Key has baffled artificers and the magically adept for neigh on centuries. No one living knows who made it. Few understand what it does. None who have learned to use it survived long enough to share its secrets. The Last Key has passed from scholar to mystic to back-alley dealer to finally come into your possession. You hold it in your hands and feel the weight of knowledge pull at you. Are you the one to finally unlock the secrets of the Last Key?
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The mechanics and inner workings of The Last Key are up to the DM and should be made to fit the world in which The Artifactorium is to be placed. On a simplistic level, The Last Key is a tool in which the players are teleported to the world of The Artifactorium. If the players have to press buttons in a correct order, break open the item like a safe, or discern its magical potential through intense study that is fine! Whatever makes your players sit up and focus will work perfectly.
Significance
The significance of The Last Key is that it is the last known device which would allow teleportation to the pocket dimension known as The Artifactorium. There are no other known ways to reach this place and the treasures and dangers therein are thought to be undisturbed since its last occupation.
Rarity
The item, while mystical and priceless, should be considered legendary as it is the stuff of legends. However, unlike many actual legendary items, this item does not bestow any abilities, skill increases, or include sentience.
