The Ruby Star Society
"The Truth is in the Stars"
~Society Motto
While the Archivists of Emberhold seek to preserve what was, the Ruby Star Society tries to understand what is. There is significant overlap in their activities, especially when it pertains to astronomy and astrology. Astronomy was a fascination of Imperial scholars and mages and so naturally their writings and methods are of interest to Emberhold, but the Ruby Star Society continues to practice those methods.

Public Agenda
The society's goal is to unlock exactly what happened during the Dragon Madness, why magic has changed, and whether it is likely to happen again. Of course there is the related concern: was it deliberate? They believe the truth behind this will most likely be found by examining the way the celestial bodies surrounding out world have changed in position, alignment, and behavior.
History
Whatever the Ruby Star Society claims about it's intentions, the truth is more complex. It is true that the society is engaged is a massive project to understand the Dragon Madness, but their reasons are not pure scientific curiosity. They are guided by a will, because they know a truth that no one else does: Not all the dragons went mad.
Azanth was far from the capital, a scholar and astrologer, and many of the early members of the society were his disciples. He perceived in the stars that something strange was about to occur and that it spelled doom for his kind. He offered warnings, but was ignored, and so he began a process by which he might preserve his intellect and continue his research no matter what happened. With the aid of his disciples, Azanth performed a dreadful bloody ritual and made himself a lich. With his soul separated from his body, he weathered the Dragon Madness unchanged, and has continued to guide the Society from the shadows.
What not even most Society members know is that Azanth knows what happened to cause the Madness, but he does not yet know how it was done. If he can discover how it was done, he can undo it, or failing that, at least take vengeance on those who destroyed his kind, or on their ancestors.
