The High Consort

"The walls and stones of the High Hill stand as my domain. Within them, I am your liege. You weep when I insist it, you bleed when I command it."
— High Consort Lemia
The husband or wife of the Dynasty King, the position of High Consort was one of the most powerful in Thripia. Typically, they were responsible for overseeing the Wise Council, when it was an advisory body and before it overthrew the monarchy, as well as handle the more minor decisions undeserving of the reigning monarch's attention. The Old Palace was said to be more under the sway of the Consort than the King himself. Should the Dynasty King die, the High Consort retains their title until a new king is crowned at which time they become known as Dowager Consort. The High Consort was traditionally protected by a unique member of the Orcarous known as the Honor Guardian. After the People's Uprising, the position of High Consort was abolished

Function

The High Consort is appointed by marriage. Though the Dynasty King is always male, he may have either a husband or wife and therefore either gender may fill the role. However, due to the hereditary nature of the monarchy and the need to continue the Thraeo family line, the High Consort is almost always a woman despite the general acceptance in Thripia of male homosexuality. Furthermore, although the High Consort may effectively make any order they choose on the authority of the Dynasty King, the latter wields supreme power and may override their decision at any time.   It is the role of the High Consort to manage the palace, including servants, meetings, gatherings and other such occurrences, as well as to serve as monarch in the absence of the Dynasty King. Additionally, prior to the People's Uprising, they oversaw the meetings of the advisory Wise Council and moderated them in place of the King, often reporting back to him on the events and discussions that had taken place. It is worth noting that the Dynasty King may also have multiple concubines, though these individuals have no official power or recognition.
