Uredyar

Relative peace reigned over Othos during the 1700s, with the Eurobasar Tresivar dominant under Lysander and their enemies crushed. The Odyrzid race prospered from this change in regime. Ancient Naarvestir overlordship was tainted with the legacy of Mauger the Ruinous who lead Aemarda against the Dokaoyum. In this quiet context, two Odyrzid companions met one another outside the venerable bastion of Ukrasyar. They were Uredyar and Medeyol. Competition and fair-natured rivalry were the essence of their closeness, for such was the content of the Odyrzid character. In meeting, they called out boasts to one another, grand and tall in declaration. Uredyar exclaimed that he could hurl a warrior three-times Medeyol’s size with ease, so that he might flick away Medeyol with his little finger. Medeyol replied that he could hurl a stone three-times farther and harder than Uredyar, so that Uredyar would never have the chance. Indeed? Uredyar challenged Medeyol to prove that claim. The two of them departed from Ukrasyar, moving deep into the wilderness which surrounded that bastion. There, Uredyar took up smooth stones from aside winnowing woodland steams, tossing them against Medeyol who scrambled for cover. Medeyol took up projectiles of his own and returned fire.   Back and forth the companions tested their strength with hurling. Medeyol pelted Uredyar’s position from a broad gully, crouching below whenever Uredyar took aim. Uredyar arose amidst the barrage and rushed behind tree cover some strides closer, holding up tree-bark as a shield. Medeyol then took up an especially large stone and shattered the shield with a well-aimed throw. Uredyar kept low, gathering up a dozen stones before tossing them blind over head into Medeyol’s position. Stone crushed against stone and stone against dense roots. Medeyol fled into a farther nook between trees, and there found something strange. It was the remains of a wooden casket. Nothing was inside beside an iron band, which appeared to be the shattered remnants of a helmet. He reached for it, then nothing. Uredyar had reached him, then struck him behind the head with a larger stone in ill-calcuated victory. This was not his intention. In shock, Uredyar leapt down to his companion, but noted that he was not slain but only wounded. He also noticed the strange iron band Medeyol paused beside. It was crude, but beautiful in its hewn nature amidst the free-growing wilderness abounding.   Uredyar took up the iron band, placing it upon his neck. The Eshanic voice introduced itself as Ectival.   When Medeyol awoke, Uredyar stood above him. The latter announced through jesting that he was indeed the stronger hurler of stones. Medeyol brushed him off with a curse, then asked if Uredyar noticed a strange iron band hereabouts. Uredyar grabbed that which was around his neck and stated that it was his rightful prize as the victor. It was nothing, in any case, and unworthy of Medeyol’s jealousy.
