Nursery Rhymes

Here is a selection of nursery rhymes commonly told around the western shores of The Azure Sea.   Author's Note: These are not my original creations. I have taken existing nursery rhymes and adapted them where necessary.

The Restless Man

Woodcut of the Restless Man and his cat by L. Leslie Brooke
There was a restless man
And he walked his restless cat
They found a restless chapel
Where they caught a restless rat
  He glows with restless colour
And he gives off restless steam
When you see the restless man
His face will make you scream

The Oni

Lock the door, blow out the light;
The hungry Oni haunts the night.
Hide and tremble, little one;
The Oni wants to have some fun.
Hear it scratching on the door;
See its shadow cross the floor.
The sun won’t rise for quite a while;
Till then, beware the Oni’s smile.

Ba Ba Kraken

Ba ba kraken, come see thee tarry!
Slow not, wait not come and harry.
Ba ba kraken come and sup,
And eat the world and sky right up!

Mumble Mumble Scarecrow

Mumble Mumble Scarecrow
Alone in the Maze
Sleeping in the daytime
A stitched man he stays
But when the moon she rises
Up Mumble Gets
He shakes his hands at first
And moves his feet the next
And when the dog is snoring
And when you’re fast asleep
Mumble Mumble Scarecrow
Will find you good to eat

Little Old Orc

A little ol’ orc
With a queer new quirk
Took to a lass in lace.
He wooed her with cider
Then lay down beside her
And created a whole new race.

The Raven

Black on black, a raven’s wing
A pretty girl waits for a ring
A pretty girl waits for a feast
A humble glance before a priest.
Red on black, a boy lies dead
The Devil came and took his head
The Devil came down from the mists
His lightning blade, it never missed.
Black on blue, a raven soars
A boy is free of all the wars
A boy is free of all the lies
He pays a visit to his bride.
Black on black, a raven’s wing
A girl in white dress does not sing
A girl in white dress only cries
Of black on black up in the skies.

Traditional woodcut of The Troll by Eric Hotz

The Troll

Don’t try to cut it or to maim
Result would be the same
It won’t fall dead
If you chop off its head
So burn it down with a flame.

Old Grim Jack

Run run and watch your back
Try to hide from Old Grim Jack
If you’ve been naughty you’ve been bad
One chance was all you had
Try to scream, hear him come
Your time is almost done
Hear him drag across his spade
You’ve never been more afraid
Under dirt, under stone
Take your last breath all alone
