Ferrians

A result of the magic of the Great Cataclysm, ferrians are a cross between earth and sky. The name applies to a number of species of birds whose feathers are made from steel. Despite the added weight, they have no trouble flying, and their tougher exteriors make them more likely to survive an attack from a predator.

Anatomy

Ferrians can be a multitude of different bird species from any family, though they are never birds of prey. The reason for this is unknown.

Ecology and Habitats

Logic dictates that ferrians should be unable to live in areas where extreme temperatures occur, as metals are poor insulators, but they seem to be able to survive anywhere that their non-magical predecessors did.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Since steel is so expensive and difficult to make, even the small amounts that can be harvested from these birds' feathers are valuable. Of course, actually hunting one is difficult, as their hard feathers are capable of deflecting arrows that don't hit head-on.
