Troy
Troy was born Molly Morrison, and grew up in Duluth, Minnesota. As a teenager she become fascinated with prog rock and taught herself to play guitar. She was living a normal little life until her 16th birthday in 1964 when her entire family died in a house fire. Troy was the sole survivor, she emerged from the flaming wreck of her family home without a scratch on her.
What she didn’t tell anyone was that in the moment before she died, something reached out to her from the other side. There were no words, but a bargain was made, and the darkness entered her. It kept her safe, and gave her power like she never dreamed of, but Troy herself is unsure of the source of the power and of the cost she will have to pay. Troy quickly figured out that some dark thing had sought after her, and the death of her family was part of a plan to capture her soul. Resentful of being anyone or anything’s pawn, Troy decided to use her dark gifts against the creatures that her new powers revealed to her.
Troy has androgynous features and a punk rock style, equal parts Joan Jett and David Bowie. She has angular features, blue eyes, and jet black hair. Troy pretty much always wears her leather vest, with a skeletal face and the name of her band, Good Die Young, on the back. She often has her guitar slung over her shoulder.
Her ability to read minds and talk to spirits made her an effective detective and her Hex powers gave her a means to destroy evil where she finds it. Troy casts her Hexes with a series of hand gestures and the occasional incantation or shout. More powerful Hexes result in anime effects; hair standing up, little floating rocks, arcs of red energy surrounding her etc. When Troy uses telepathy her pupils turn red, and extended or extreme feats can cause the whites to fill in as well.
In ‘64 Troy was writing stuff influenced by the British Invasion(Beatles, Kinks, Donovan, Rolling Stones) that has all the hallmarks of Prog. Basically, she’s was ahead of her time. Troy wasn't in a band yet, but she went to open mic nights by herself and played for change at Pike Place Market. In ‘74, her band Good Die Young is a straight punk band.
Troy's bandmates have some idea that something weird is going on with her, but haven't seen any monsters yet. Rex is a mysterious guy, however, who writes a lot of songs about supernatural creatures and Troy suspects he may be hiding some dark secrets of his own. Troy does her best to keep her hunting secret from them, more for than own sakes. She trusts them, and they are open minded enough to believe whatever she tells them, but they are only human and Troy doesn't want them to get hurt.
I think whatever terrible thing is after Troy had marked her from birth, but always planned to claim her as a teenager. She remembers hearing her parents fighting when she was little, something about her father's family, and being followed from the Old World. Troy would often have nightmares and night terrors which grew steadily worse as she approached her 16th birthday. She's not getting much sleep in '64, and doesn't like being alone at night. Troy has a low key fear of the dark but would die before admitting it.
As to what exactly this dark force is and what it wants, I'd rather leave that up to the GM. Troy has a Dark Side that comes with 3 tags and I'm picking Secrets, Rage, and Self Destruction. The GM gets to ask Troy to do nasty stuff based on those tags and if she refuses she can temporarily lose her powers. Troy thinks she is being groomed to be some sort of agent of evil and is desperate to find a way out of the bargain. At the same time, she has embraced her Spooky powers and persona. Troy isn't sure that she is a good person, like maybe she was chosen for a reason and she shouldn't fight it, or maybe she is lying to herself because she doesn't want to go back to being powerless.
I like the idea that her dad scored a job with Boeing in the winter of '64 and moved his family out to start a new life in the city. After the strange events of the following summer he felt he lost his job, and maybe some of his sanity, and moved them all back to Minnesota. Troy's dark side comes from her father's bloodline after all, and he's not like her but is still under the influence of otherworldly evil.
