Geography
SpellBreak Marsh was once an island with a bountiful forest and a well-maintained marsh, rich with life of relatively safe creatures living within it. However, a duel between two legendary sorceress' sundered the island, leaving half of it a thick marsh with glimmering trees and glimmering animals. And the other half, though the jungle maintained, was corrupted beyond recognition with a mixture of arcane and primordial magic, transforming it into a breeding ground for highly dangerous creatures and flora. And between these two intense biomes is the battleground, a mess of magic so wild only one people are able to make it their home, the Night Warriors
Crystal-Moss Jungle
On the far west portion of the island is the least corrupted part of the jungle, where the grass sparkles and the trees are always surrounded by thousands of glowing bugs. The ground is stained with magical remnant, and settlements are few and far between. The animals have all adapted to their new home, far quicker than any person could, which makes the jungle dangerous even in settlements. When an animal is exposed to that much magical energy, it eventually leads to them being able to harness and conjure spells like any other person. And that is most prevalent in the thick jungle, where animals are aplenty and their receptiveness to magic is tenfold that of any other island.Heartbreak Swamp:
To the east, a marsh that used to be full of trading towns and waterside settlements has since turned into a series of ghost villages, magical waters, and beasts that lurk beneath. The marsh has since become a literal ghost land for lost spirits denied rest, cared for by the few Fae that still maintain their gardens. Such matters has prevented the Fae, natural protectors, from rescuing the living from things like Crystal Crocs, Young Basilisks, and Sea Serpents. That is only the threats in the water, land offers no sanctum. If you manage to cross the randomly shallow and deep waters that separate the marshlands you'll only find predatory plants, husks and amalgamated souls, and creepy crawlies the size of bears.The Hex Fallout:
The Battleground, where the battle between the two great sorceress' began and ended, is by far the most dangerous, wild, and unpredictable portion of the isle. Beasts driven mad by Arcane and Soul magic mixing together. Plant life completely hostile to any living thing. And spirits and ghosts infused with so much magic they're constantly shattered and reformed in different shapes. And a tribe of warriors so ruthless, so driven by the will of their Wild Gods, that they're the only people capable of living in such a place.Ecosystem
Just as everything gives off a magical energy called "Essence", everything is able to absorb Essence as well. Enough Essence remnant left behind, and it "corrupts" living things. This is only typically possible in large scale battles between two opposing armies, both of which would have to use some magic to leave behind a mark. Or, in the case of Spellbreak Marsh, two extremely powerful sorceress' locked in a multi-day battle without rest. The ecosystem became completely twisted and malformed, creatures adapted or died, their offspring evolved or perished. And the plant life rapidly changed in order to house their new overflow of magic. Beasts hunt plants, plants hunt beasts, no longer was there a balanced cycle of life, merely the ones capable of surviving.
Ecosystem Cycles
Season of the Diamond Lotus
The "First" season in the cycle of Spellbreak marsh, Season of the Diamond Lotus begins upon the first blooming of the flowers growing in the marshy waters. Considered the most peaceful season of the island as all the creatures become slightly more docile. The air has yet to hit peak humidity, and the pests that fly and scurry are yet to come out in full force.Season Of Broken Bone:
When the island is at it's warmest, the air is humid, and the animals begin to become more and more hostile, it is called Season of Broken Bone. The magical residue from battles past becomes excited during this season, causing all manners of strange phenomena that maintains until Season of the Diamond Lotus. This is also when the waters around the island are calmest, trapping lesser sailors and captains should they stay until the season ends.Season of Calamity:
As the season of Broken Bone ends, the activated excited essence takes form as the air gets colder, creating "Vortexes" of magic. Pockets of spells that vary in size appear randomly for random lengths of time. The animals and plant life become incredibly hostile. Though this can be managed through great effort, any mass of land even slightly outside of settlement grounds are highly dangerous.Season of The Frozen Sun:
