Fire Wyvern

Art by ERA7, I do not own this artwork
Fire Wyverns are a species of dragon rarely found in high altitude locales, large barren deserts, and rolling plains. Fire Wyverns are the only dragon that can breathe fire, reaching up to thousands of degrees, and have a strong natural armor making them sought after by militaries and conquerors everywhere. Most Fire Wyverns reside on Dratreth for its high cliffs and warm temperatures. Fire wyverns are apex predators and eat large prey animals like elephants, hippogryphs, gethnors, and basilisks.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Fire wyverns are large quadrupedal reptiles with massive bat-like wings with two fingers and a thumb, powerful hind legs with 3 talon-tipped toes on each foot, a large body with spikes with armor plating running down their backs, a large head with 2 pairs of backward-facing horns as well as massive, toothy jaws, and a long tail just as long as the rest of their body.   Despite their powerful limbs, fire wyverns are not fast runners compared to ice drakes and earth wyrms, mainly using their limbs to quickly maneuver across uneven terrain, climb surfaces, pick up large prey, and lift themselves off the ground. Fire wyverns can reach 12-37 meters in length and 27-78 meters in wingspan, 4-12 meters in height, and weight of 6-26 tons. Although their massive size would be a problem for most creatures, fire wyverns are still able to efficiently take flight at exceedingly large sizes and travel great distances quickly using unknown magic.   Fire wyverns' lifespans are extremely long, between 100-600 years, and do not weaken in strength until the last few years of their lives, instead only growing in power. Fire wyverns reach adulthood between ages 17-24 and reach their maximum size at ages 35-45. As is in their name, fire wyverns are capable of exhaling fire from their mouths, reaching temperatures of 2192-5432 degrees Fahrenheit (1200-3000 Celsius). They do this through special glands in their lungs and throat filled with methane and an organic flammable mixture (dubbed wyvern gel) that can only be ignited through a magic spell and burns for days when lit.   Fire wyverns also have an incredible resistance to intense heat, including organs and bones, with them being able to survive in molten magma for 2 hours or more; Fire wyverns themselves also radiate a large amount of heat from their bodies. Fire wyvern bones are also incredibly strong, bendable, and light with a black coloration.

Biological Traits

Differences between fire wyverns vary and appear to be random. Differences include pigmentation, size, intelligence, and age. Although some fire wyverns can only grow around 28 meters in length, others can grow to be titanically sized, with the largest fire wyvern recorded being 20 m tall, 47 m long with a wingspan of 78 m. Fire wyvern age also differs as some fire wyverns can live up to 600 years while others can only live half that. Pigmentation appears to be the most random biological trait that fire wyverns have. Fire wyvern pigmentation appears as hues rather than set colors. These hues of color include reds, browns, yellows, greens, greys, and blacks.   Black fire wyverns, however, are the largest and most powerful of their species, as well as the most intelligent. When entering adulthood, black fire wyverns are capable of exhaling a different type of fire from that of traditional wyverns, called Cleansing Breath. Cleansing breath is a special magical blue fire that destroys only the intended target and nothing else. Targets become almost completely immolated into ash after a few seconds. Individuals who are not targets describe being in the fire as "being in a strong, cool breeze." Black fire wyverns are the most coveted of wyverns by military leaders.

Ecology and Habitats

Fire wyverns inhabit almost every continent, except for Mowera and Drakel. Fire wyverns prefer to live in areas with warm climates and vast landscapes with open skies. Fire wyverns usually live in mountains, deserts, plains, canyons, and semi-forested lands. Fire wyverns will make their homes on large, hard-to-climb mountains where they can easily view their territory for prey or intruders. Should it learn a sapient species has invaded its territory, it will go out of its way to find and kill them. Reasons for why it does this have ranged from simple dominance displays to potentially personal trauma with sapient species.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Fire wyverns are apex predators and hunt only large herds/packs of animals or hunt large prey such as elephants and gethnors. When hunting, fire wyverns will circle and follow from far above without their prey noticing anything before diving down and either picking up the animal and dropping them from large heights or quickly burning the animal to death. If the animal is too big to pick up, does not die in 1-3 burn runs, or is immune to fire, the fire wyvern will dive bomb the animal, tackle them using its claws, and will either bite down on the jugular or continue to burn the animal. Noticeably, fire wyverns eat their food cooked like humans.   Like other dragon species, fire wyverns are capable of storing fat within their waists and can survive for up to a month on this alone. Remarkably, even during starvation, fire wyverns are capable of going on for 11-15 days without food, although they will be more desperate in their food items, eating even small creatures that would normally go unnoticed.

Biological Cycle

Fire wyverns generally prefer warm climates compared to cold ones, hibernating during winters. Fire wyverns that live in mountains will either find a cave and warm it up with their body heat or leave the area and hibernate elsewhere; fire wyverns living in desert and plains biomes will do the same. Fire wyverns living in consistently hot climates will not hibernate at all.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Fire wyverns have incredible perception and sensory powers. Fire wyverns have forward-facing eyes and good binocular vision, capable of seeing an object relatively clear from 9 kilometers away. Fire wyverns also have very good senses of smell, picking up smells from 7 km away. Although still better than humans, fire wyverns comparatively don't have good hearing.
