Code Legal

The Code Legal is the Laws that apply inside the various cities of Gallica. Similar laws apply throughout Haven.

Some cities have courts that turn law into a public spectacle, some have the accuser pay for the court fees, some are hosted by churches. Speciffics vary from city to city.

Crimes:

Below you will see collections of crimes and their usual punishments.

I. Crimes against Officials, and Nobles:

Assaulting or impersonating a noble: death
Assaulting or impersonating an official: flogging, imprisonment up to a tenday, and fine up to 500 silver crowns
Blackmailing an official: flogging and exile up to 10 years
Bribery or attempted bribery of an official: exile up to 20 years and fine up to double the bribe amount
Insulting an official or noble: flogging, edict or honour duel
Murder or attempted murder of an official or noble: torture, followed by death
Spreading rumors or defaming a noble: fine up to 100 silver crowns, edict or pillory.
Using magic to influence a noble without consent: imprisonment up to a year and fine or damages up to 10'000 silver crowns
Using magic to influence an official without consent: fine or damages up to 10'000 silver crowns and edict

II. Crimes against the City:

Aiding and abetting known criminals, harboring fugitives: varies based on severity of the crimes comitted by the criminal
Arson: death or hard labor up to 1 year, with fines and/or damages covering the cost of repairs plus 2000 silver crowns
Brandishing weapons without due cause: imprisonment up to a tenday and/or fine up to 100 silver crowns
Disturbing the peace: fine up to 100 silver crowns, edict or pillory.
Espionage: death or permanent exile
Forgery of an official document: flogging and exile for 10 summers
Hampering justice: fine up to 200 silver crowns and hard labor up to a tenday
Littering: fine up to 10 silver crowns and edict or pillory
Poisoning a city well: death
Resisting arrest: fine up to 100 silver crowns
Tax evasion: flogging, fine of up to 10'000 silver crowns
Trading illicit goods: Seizure of illicit goods, fine of up to 2000 silver crowns as well as flogging, exile or death
Trading magical goods without a permit: Seizure of illicit goods, fine of up to 10'000 silver crowns
Trading in slaves: flogging and hard labor up to 10 years
Treason: death
Vandalism: imprisonment up to a tenday plus fine and/or damages covering the cost of repairs plus up to 200 silver crowns

III. Crimes against the Gods:

Assaulting a priest or preacher: imprisonment up to a tenday, damages up to 1000 silver crowns paid to the victim and edict
Defacing a temple: fine up to 1000 silver crowns and edict
Disorderly conduct within a temple: fine up to 100 silver crowns and edict
Necromancy: death
Public blasphemy against a god or church: edict or pillory
Theft of temple goods or offerings: imprisonment up to a tenday and damages up to double the cost of the stolen items
Tomb-robbing: imprisonment up to a tenday and damages covering the cost of repairs plus 500 silver crowns

IV. Crimes against Citizens:

Assaulting a citizen: imprisonment up to a tenday, flogging, or damages up to 1000 silver crowns paid to the victim
Blackmailing or intimidating a citizen: fine and/or damages up to 500 silver crowns and edict
Burglary or thievery: imprisonment up to 1 year and damages equal to the value of the stolen goods plus up to 500 silver crowns
Damaging property or livestock: imprisonment up to a tenday as well as damages covering the cost of repairs or replacements plus up to 1000 silver crowns
Spreading rumors or defamation: fine up to 100 silver crowns, edict or pillory.
Murdering a citizen without justification: death or hard labor up to 10 years and damages up to 10'000 silver crowns paid to the victim's kin
Murdering a citizen with justification: exile up to 5 years, hard labor up to 3 years and/or damages up to 10'000 silver crowns paid to the victim's kin
Robbery: hard labor up to 1 month and damages equal to the value of the stolen goods plus 500 silver crowns
Using magic to influence a citizen without consent: fine or damages up to 1000 silver crowns and edict

Punishments

Punishment for a crime can include one or more of the following, based on the nature of the crime, who or what the crime is committed against, and the criminal record of the convicted:

Edict: Forbidding the convicted from doing something; example; going near a temple or neighbor. Violation of an edict can result in imprisonment, hard labor, and/or a fine.
Pillory: The convict will be restrained and publicly displayed, with a sign denoting their crime. Bystanders may hurl abuse, mud or rocks at them at their leisure. A sentence will usually be only be a few hours but will be deeply humiliating.
Flogging/Caning A set number of whip strokes or strikes with a cane.
Fine: Payable to the city. If the convicted is unwilling to pay the fine, the money will be seized by force. In case of inability to pay the procedure changes from city to city. Examples include imprisoning the convicterd until one of his friends or family pays for him, selling the convicted's belongings, condemning them to hard labout until their debt is paid or exiling them.
Damages: payable to the injured party or victim's kin; same procedure as fines paid to the city.
Imprisonment in the dungeons: For a period of days or months. It is generally cramped, cold and unsanitary for anybody that isnt capable of bribing the jailers. In case of an escape, the future punishment of the criminal will be increased.
Hard labor: Mining, construction or other hard physically demanding labour for a period of days, months, or years.
Exile: For a number of years or summers. A person in exile will be escorted by guards to collect their belongings and then to the city gates. The exiled may not enter the city and is considered an outlaw; they are not protected by its laws and citizens may do to them as they please with no official sanctions.
Death: By hanging or beheading. The deceased's belongings transfer to the city unless stated otherwise.
