Furufey (foo-roo-fay)
These strange amphibians live in colonies where they can cover a large ground area while disguising themselves as moss. If they are stepped on by an unsuspecting creature, their poisonus quills will paralyze their prey, after which they will all consume it together.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Furufeys have very flat bodies with a long tail and a pair of skinny arms but completely lack hind legs. Their forelimbs have four clawed fingers for gripping.
Their heads are large and flat with enormous skyward-facing yellow eyes. Their mouth is wide and filled with sharp teeth.
The overside of the body is covered in a green fur-like structure made to resemble grass or moss. The underside is hairless and covered in tough, black skin which they slide around on. On their backs they have long black quills that are coated in poison. The quills are detatchable and grow back if lost.
Genetics and Reproduction
Furufeys reproduce quickly, as the female can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. She lays the eggs at the edges of ponds or lakes and then leave them to fend for themselves.
Growth Rate & Stages
After hatching from their eggs as larva, the furufey will slowly undergo metamorphisis as they loose their gills and grow forelimbs and fur. Despite starting their lives in the water, adult furufeys are bad swimmers.
Ecology and Habitats
Furufeys prefer humid environments with dense mossy ground where they can camouflage themselves.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Furufeys are carnivores and cooperate to take down whatever creature is unfortunate enough to step into their trap. A colony of furufeys can strip a carcass clean in a day.
Biological Cycle
Furufeys hibernate in the colder months by digging themselves underground.
Behaviour
When they are not pursuing prey, they are quite passive. They spend most of their day laying completely still and rarley interact with eachother despite living in large colonies.
Additional Information
Social Structure
While furufeys live in large colonies, they lack any sort of social structure as their lifestyle is simple and they simply find strength in numbers.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Furufeys are deaf, but are very sensetive to vibrations in the ground. Their large eyes give them excellent vision, even at night.
