Krax (cr-acks)

These small predators dig burrows where they live in small family groups. They are quite common and are known for their tendency to snap at the feet of their enemy when threatened.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kraxes have stocky bodies with four short legs and a short, thick tail. Their heads are large and bear a sharp beak with a crest used for digging. They have sharp eyes and small, round ears far back on the head. While most of the body is covered in scales, a short mane of fur grows along the top of the head and spine. The hair on the tail is very long and sticks out like bristles.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kraxes are monogamous and stick to one partner their whole lives. When kraxes pick their mates, they dig a burrow together which they settle in. They tend to have one litter a year, around 3 - 6 eggs, which both parents help raise and take care of.

Growth Rate & Stages

Krax hatchlings are dependent on their parents for up to 3 years, after which they leave to find a mate and dig their own burrow. While still living in their family group, older litters will help care for their younger siblings until they leave.

Ecology and Habitats

Kraxes can live anywhere there is soft soil to dig in. They prefer warmer climates. Forests, savannahs and fields are the most common places to find them in.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Kraxes are opportunistic omnivores and will eat anything from small mammals, birds and insects, to roots, fruits and berries. They will also scavange for carrion or even steal prey from other predators if they feel brave enough.

Biological Cycle

Despite being reptiles, kraxes are warm-blooded and can survive the colder months by sticking close to their warm burrows. They will still go above ground to hunt or scavange, but ar less active in the cold.

Behaviour

Kraxes are very aggressive towards anyone nearing their territory, even other kraxes, but they have been observed to be gentle and caring for their family group. When threatened by a larger creature, they will try to intimidate the other by screeching and snapping their beak. They tend to target their enemy's feet when attacking. If they are surrounded or feel cornered they will flee.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Kraxes have an excellent sense of smell, as well as an ability to sense the faintest vibrations in the ground, which they use for hunting.
