Taupin (taw-pin)
Taupins are flying reptiles that flock near shorelines in large numbers to scavenge and nest. Their unique facial features make them easily recognizable.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Taupins have round bodies covered in fuzzy pycnofibers. They have short hind legs and very long forelimbs that function as wings as well as for terrestial locomotion, the wings have a rounded shape with three small fingers for grasping, and one long finger for holding up the wing. They have a very short tail that supports a membrane between the legs. Their head is rounded with large eyes and a short beak. The "lips" of the taupin have extentions that are can be folded out in a threatening display, making the mouth appear larger than it actually is. They also have two long antennae-like structures near the nose.
Genetics and Reproduction
Taupins mate for life and will cooperate in building nests on cliffsides each mating season near summer. They usually lay 3 - 5 eggs per season. The females protect the eggs and nest while the male gathers food for his whole family.
Growth Rate & Stages
Taupin hatchlings stay in their nest for about three months before they leap off the cliffside to fly and find food in their own. They tend to stay with the same colony they were born in.
Ecology and Habitats
Taupins live near shorelines and cliffsides where they can nest and hunt.
Dietary Needs and Habits
A taupin's diet consists of fish, molluscs, crustaceans and carrion.
Behaviour
Taupins generally tolerate other creatures if they are left alone, but if they feel protective or need to establish dominance they will display their mouth-flaps and make loud noises to intmidate opponents.
