Robert

Duke Robert Capet (a.k.a. the Strong)

Robert “the Strong” was a Frankish warrior and adventurer, famed for his deeds.   He was granted lands and titles by the king, Charles the Bald in an attempt to win favour with his subjects and gain the loyalty of a powerful ally.   Charles’ weakness and the scheming of his court finally drove Robert to join in rebellion with the Bretons under Salomon.   Robert’s Neustrians faced the loyalist Frankish army at Le Mans and crushed the forces loyal to Charles in battle. However in the aftermath, Robert was grievously wounded and captured.   After some time, Robert was allowed to return to his castle to recuperate. During the months that followed it is said that he had a vision. He emerged from his convalescence proclaiming Charles the true King appointed by God at that he, Robert, would be his righteous fury.   Robert began to raise an army to crush Charles’ enemies, declaring he would end the insolence of the Bretons once and for all. But Salomon, aligned with the Danish Sea-King, Haesten , launched a surprise assault into Frankish lands and on July 2 866, Robert the Strong was was killed at the Battle of Brissarthe.
