Post Office established in 1870 next to Big Walnut Creek. Junction of the MKT with the Nebraska, Topeka, Iola & Girard Railroad – MKT reached here in 1871. 27 miles from Fort Scott, 8 miles from Osage Mission, 16 miles from Girard. Grain elevator, boarding house, S. H. Cover general store. School taught by J. Johnston. Methodist Church in the residence of F. Robins. Small Catholic Church (Father Ambrose). William H. Edsel (trustee since 1868).
Peter Harpool – Justice of the Peace. Club footed, but much of a man physically. It was currently reported that when lie fought lie got on his knees.
Benton Kramer – constable. Dave Kramer’s house is a two-story cabin in the middle of nowhere where dances are held.
J. Cole small store next to blacksmith shop called “Fairview”.
Thomas F. Jones – store and post office near the school house – sold to Mr. Finklestein
Shackleton Dry Goods (an extensive selection of gloves Newton’s store; Pelsue’s drug store; Getting’s lumber yard; Guard’s blacksmithy; Mudd the butcher; sawmill on Walnut Creek
Ully’s – bar
In January of 1873: A.J. Gass killed by William Moore, large rough profane transient. Took an axe and severed Gass’s head, then stole his wallet, a bundle of clothes, and ran away. A gang of locals gave chase. He hid but was found and shot in the back. He was buried on the banks of the Little Walnut Creek and all traces of his grave obliterated.
