Aleks: what if Britney's mother's father was the captain of the of boat which was lost with all hands and Bei's husband aboard?
Vig: Oooohhhh say more about that?
Aleks: Well I had that backstory for Bei where she was widowed... But obviously her husband wouldn't have been fishing out alone...
Vig: I love that, and wonder if the fact that he worked with Grandpa [whatever her mother's maiden name was] could mean that Bei has some information about Britney / her family that she doesn't know? Or that she doesn't want to have known?
Aleks: Trauma is sad and affects people in complex ways... sometimes people don't pass the stories on but it leaves a gap where things go unprocessed. Bei would be about ages with Britney Crane's mother....
Vig: Yep. And you are now officially Mrs Crane's player :-) It's not suprising Britney doesn't really know Bei well. She only really pays attention to the farm, and herself. (We think Britney is an only child)
Aleks: Bei would have lost her husband and the young Mrs Crane her father which would have forced them to be close for a time... but maybe once Britney's mother married and started a family..... it would be different.... Bei didn't remarry and Anice is like a daughter to her but didn't come into her life until later.... Bei went travelling herself in the intervening time...
Vig: So they drifted apart? And then Bei came back to the island after travelling.
Aleks: Britney's mother is a Margaret... she needs a maiden name... but yes essentially... I think Margaret was probably still quite sad when Britney was a baby and threw herself into giving Britney everything she wanted... she's spoilt but in the sort of "She must never feel sorrow" overprotective way that can stem from the most well meaning attempt at support by someone carrying a heavy heart.
Vig Loving this. Bird name... um... Harrier? Margaret Harrier?
Aleks: Oh yes that's perfect <3 She likes to go by "Margo".
Vig: Nice. So we think Britney is an only child and therefore will inherit the fairly substantial farm they have. Meaning... either Margo inherited it, or built it
Aleks: is it the Crane's farm? Margo has skill with cheese from her mother's side... it was her father's side who were at sea.... If she was a dairy girl maybe that was how she met Britney's father... BRB.... Now I need cheese....
Vig: lol Maybe it's the Harrier's farm, then? A dairy farm, unlike most farms on the island, which mainly have sheep.
Aleks: There are sheep and goats that can be milked.... but yes they keep cows too
Vig: So Britney Crane is actually Britney Crane-Harrier. Or Harrier-Crane, maybe, but she goes by Crane because... because she lost her father before she even knew him, so she uses his name to try to keep his memory alive.
Aleks: I killed off the grandfather... so the father is still there....
Vig: Right!
Aleks: Margaret's father is dead but not her husband
Vig: Right right
Aleks: Margaret's mother's family and the Crane's have a long association as the dairy people hence their marriage and why the farm is so big strategic....
Vig: Cool
Aleks: The father's family were the fishermen, So the Harriers worked for the Cranes.... Or I've gone back too far and gotten lost! Whoever the other side is... it doesn't matter we'll run out of birbs! Harrier's fish people.... Cranes dairy people....
Vig: I do think the two families probably have ties going back aways, don't you? Grandpa Harrier fished... right.
Aleks: Yup I guess the cranes land runs down to the sea on one side they also processed the fish.... perfect for the family name Crane.... I imagine they ate a lot of Cullen Skink that takes smoked hadock and milk :-)
Vig: Yum! brb need a drink
Rach: So maybe the Cane name and farm come from Margo and her father was the Harrier? They can take names from either parent.
Vig: We're thinking that the island tradition is to keep family names alive, so when two families join in marriage, those parents try to give their children the surname of the family that most needs their name to be carried on.
