Four great anomalies

Red Sea Anomaly by Revyera
In The Pit, there are spots where the laws of reality can shift, warp, or completely break. Those spots tend to change their size over the years, pulsating bigger and smaller, and move, either in a pattern or completely random, quickly (up to a few meters in a month) or so slowly, that measuring the shift becomes impossible. People of The Pit commonly call those spots 'anomalies'. Anomalies vary a lot between each other, however, they all share all those traits.   There are, however, four of them in The Pit that are different enough that a completely new category of anomalies has been created. They still can be considered anomalies and they are so big that they can't just be considered a single exception. It is less like they are an exception to other anomalies and more as if they were an exception to the very concept of anomaly.   The people called them The Four Great Anomalies.

No safe spots

While normal anomalies take on spherical shapes, they don't fill out the whole volume within the area they affect. Those unfilled spots are safe from the properties of the anomaly and can even form safe passageways. When it comes to the four great anomalies, there are no safe spots. To pass through the great anomaly, one has to experience its grip.

Spreading, not moving

When other anomalies float through the layers meaningless, pulsating in their rhythm, changing directions, the great four tend to grow, consuming everything in their way. There are some ways to slow their growth, some destructive (burning the Red Sea and the Jungle), while others can be achieved by undoing what the anomaly stands for (filling the border of The Gray with life or finding the owners, both old and new, of lost things of The Junkyard).

For now, none of the four has reached the Glow of The Tree, its mysterious light that pushes away bigger hostile creatures and speeds up the growth of the flora. It is unknown what effects it will have on the Four Great Anomalies, but if it is similar to the one on the plants, it could mean an end to all the life inside of The Pit. And so, there are people who fight against their spread, trying to slow it down as much as possible or even find ways to reverse it and destroy the Four Anomalies. And, of course, there are at least a few cults that try to speed up the growth of one of them they worship or all of them at once.

The way out closes

Even if someone tried to stay within the great anomaly for a longer time, they would soon discover that they might have just lost the ability to leave. Their body or their mind might have been bound in some way. If no one helps them forcibly leave the border of the anomaly, they'll soon become a part of it.

The core of an anomaly

When traversing the great anomaly, it is possible to discover its "core". Those are the places where the anomaly first formed. Here, its effects get stronger, growing dramatically with each step closer to the center of the heart. Surviving here is almost impossible over a long time, so, it is advised to leave the core as quickly as possible.

Warped profanation of The Tree

It has been discovered that for whatever reason, each of the four great anomalies has its version of The Tree somewhere within its core. Those "Trees" reflect and embody the nature of their anomalies. They may resemble The Tree, but both their appearance and their properties are warped.
The wish hypothesis

The wish hypothesis

Lately, a hypothesis has been spread around The Pit. It is related to both The Tree, the Four Great Anomalies, and the presence of the warped versions of The Tree within them. Not long after the Awakening, every human living in The Pit had a dream where The Tree spoke to them. One of the important things it said was that reaching it would mean fulfilling one's wish.   And here comes the question, asked by those against reaching The Tree. What if the Four Great Anomalies are a product of said wishes? A wish to find or lose something for the Junkyard. A wish to destroy everything for the Grayness. As for what could be the wishes for the Red Sea and the Jungle, the crafters of this hypothesis haven't come up with yet.

Terrifying and full of existential dread. I love all the questions surrounding their existence and what would happen if they touched the Tree.
