Sand trapper Species in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

Sand trapper

Most of the Beasts from Above that come from above The Surface have an ability to fly or float. Those who do not, sometimes fall into The Pit and start to feed on anything they can find there. Among them, one of the most patient hunters are sand trappers, which closely resemble way bigger, more dangerous antlions.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Compared to antlions, sand trappers are already in their adult form and no matter how much they eat, they won't change any more. It is unknown how does their larval form looks like and if they even have one.   Sand trappers have a big round abdomen which is 2/3rds of their body length (not counting the length of the jaws). It is covered with short chitinous hair which collects a layer of sand on them, providing them with camouflage should they decide to change their hunting grounds. Next is the elongated thorax equipped with 6 long legs capable of digging in the sand. Their head is flat and wide, equipped with four massive jaws the length of their head and thorax combined.

Genetics and Reproduction

Both the reproduction or the mating rituals of sand trappers have never been observed.
If they are similar to those of other Beasts from Above, it should resemble the way the members of the Chilopoda class do/

Dietary Needs and Habits

Sand trappers dig a big, steep hole in the sand and dig themselves in on its bottom waiting for the prey that would start falling down the hole should they step in to close and sand gave under them. if the prey walks near the top of the hole without falling into it, sand trappers employ another strategy. While digging their hole, they eat some of the sand. In their insides, the sand melts together and hardens when reacting with their digestive acids. Next, they can shoot the hardened sand bullets at the legs of their victims at high velocity, wounding, or even breaking them. That increases the chances of their prey falling down towards them and if the prey is completely alone and can't run away anymore, some of the sand trappers decide to hunt it above their traps.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Asides from their chitinous carapaces, sharp jaws, and average amounts of oils covering their bodies which protect from the deadly properties of the sun, there's almost no use to sand trappers.
Their meat is inedible and even poisonous to humans.
They don't possess any gas bladders.
Other names:
Hole bugs
Lifespan
Unknown
Average Length
Up to 6 meters in length and 2 in height.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Sandstone and orange.
Geographic distribution:
They come from the territory above the Surface.
Growth rate:
Their growth hasn't been observed yet. Perception & senses:
They are completely blind, however, they can sense the vibrations in the ground through their body.
Diet:
They feed mostly on the meat but can digest almost any biological matter.
Average intelligence:
Only smart enough to eat anything smaller than them.
Social structure:
They are loner creatures for the most part, however two or more of them can create a "field" of holes to hunt. Said structures don't last too long as they start to compete for food against each other shooting the sand to their enemies' holes.

Hunting them

If one, for some reason decides to hunt sand trappers, they need to have three things.
  1. A really long spear.
  2. An ungodly aim to hit them between the eyes.
  3. A large amount of luck to not get hit by their sand bullets or fall to quick into their mouths.
