Sea Elf

PHB

High Elf (Sea Elf)

The seafaring elves of the Montipalan Islands have a reputation for being swaggering, rakish, and unparalleled sailors. They are descendants of high elves from Haelona who shunned the haughty self-righteousness of their homeland and sailed south to Cantara for a new beginning. As you might expect, this led to a deeply ingrained culture of rebelliousness and fierce-independence.   Unlike their ancestors who are content to spend their long lives in temperance and reflection, sea elves are not precious with their time and seek to make the most of it. This also leads to them rarely dying of natural causes and having a shorter life-expectancy than other elves.
"When you live as long as we do, you've got to find ways to spice life up a little."
As a sea elf, you have a keen mind and have inherited an aptitude of basic magic thanks to your fey ancestry.

ability score increase: Increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1.
age: Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old.
Size: Medium
speed: 30
Languages: Common, Elvish and one additional language of your choice.
race features:
Darkvision. Accustomed to twilit Forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only Shades of Gray.
Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on Saving Throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Trance. Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (the common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Elf Weapon Training. You have Proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow.
Cantrip. You know one cantrip of your choice from the Wizard spell list. Intelligence is your Spellcasting ability for it.

In Cantara

These elves are the primary inhabitants of the jungled Montipalan Islands on the north end of Cantara. They hail from Lamitane, Breakstorm, Soritosi, and the countless ports and fishing villages dotting the smaller isles. They aren't known to put down roots elsewhere, but you're always likely to come across more of them the closer you get to the docks of any city. Sea elves are nortorious even amongst Cantarans for their blood-deep sea-fairing culture, and a large population of them would call nothing home but their ship.
One might also hear sea elves be referred to as sun elves or Montipalan elves, and even though they left their identity as high elves behind, many still embrace the irony of the title.

Appearance

Sea elves tend towards dark skin-tones of black, bronze, and deep olive, with hair of copper, black, sandy blonde, or silver. Their eyes are bright and piercing gold, silver, blue or green. Montipalans garb themselves in bright, light, and loose-fitting clothing to match the hot climate.

Names

Montipalans seem to relish names so much that some would think they'll find any excuse to cram in as many as possible. Along with their given name and surname, it's quite common to meet Montipalans with one or more middle names honoring relatives, friends, spirits, or the town or island they were born. For instance, the name Maria De Sentigase Carmen Racionero - while long - would not seem excessive. It's no secret that many find it rather ammusing to introduce themselves to southerners by reciting their full name at speed.
Some elves or their families are old enough to still maintain their high-elven surnames, which creates interesting combinations of Montipalan and old fashioned names. For example: Venustiana Antimos Theyafaren.

Influence: Montipalan naming is primarily based in Italian, augmented with strong Spanish and Portuguese influence. Playing with applying Italian sensibilites to Spanish names can have great results, and vice versa. Avoiding or altering names that sound steriotypical can help heighten the flavor of your name and ensure your charcter feels Montipalan instead of Italian.
Feel free to push the boundaries and experiment with the influence. Explore different sounds for consonents; you might prefer a "C" in a name be hard, soft, or make a "ch" sound, a pair of "L's" might sound better softened into "Y" sounds, or you might like the Portuguese pronunciation of "R's" (a hard, throaty "H") and "de" (like "je"). Montipalan's play it fast and loose with their language. Hard "R's" should almost always be rolled though.
