Kalashtar

The kalashtar procedure is only performed within the Celestial City, and usually those chosen for the honour were obligated to remain there, adjunct to the court, for at least five years. When I was chosen, there were only ten of us a year. Now there are at least twenty, often more, and there's even talk of trying to change the ritual, make it 'safer.' We are attempting to resolve a problem that does not exist. Frankly, if your change fails, it means the Veil didn't want you. Thank the Empress that you were stopped before you started sticking your nose into a plane it didn't belong in. We don't need a bunch of upstarts polluting our most sacred Scholar's Halls.   She-who-spoke-with-sunlight, The Case for Further Kalashtar Restrictions: A Reassesment of Endowment Fatality Rates
The most dedicated and accomplished scholars, mystics, and priests of the Lotus Caste are chosen from their Scholar's halls to undertake an Arcane Genetic Modifications that imbues them with an innate attachment to the aether, granting them psychic powers. The kalashtar that have formed a perfect attachment retain full individuality, bound to spiritual energies without interference. However, many kalashtar complete the procedure imperfectly, and may hear the voices of spirits, be swayed by their whims, or even become tied to a spirit that houses itself in their body, living essentially as two minds.   The procedure to become a kalashtar be performed on any individual with enough mental fortitude to survive it. Its primary physical change is turning hair white. Apart from this, a kalashtar that has undergone a highly successful procedure will retain their original appearance. Those that find themselves bound to a particular spirit may begin to shift in appearance to match the original body of their second soul.

Kalashtar Names

It is traditional for a kalashtar to be given a new name by other sages once the procedure is successful. These are 'accomplishment-names,' often extremely long and honouring the achievement that led them to be nominated to become kalashtar. They are usually shortened when used in casual conversation.   Examples: He-Who-Writ-The-Stars, She-Who-Tore-The-Veil, They-Who-Danced-In-Dreams
