Kenku

One of the first beast races engineered by the Empire, the kenku were adapted from birds to provide a house-slave counterpart to the tabaxi soldiers and agents. For this reason, kenku were originally better-educated than other stone caste races, because they were used as tutors and scribes, as well as maids and footmen.   However, a little over a century ago, a particularly successful slave-uprising was led by Petals-of-Ink, a raven kenku who learnt magic. She was eventually captured and killed. Fearing the rise of another kenku like her, the Empire created an AGM procedure known as 'muting,' which is used on all kenku eggs to remove their power of speech once born, leaving them only able to mimic. This procedure is reversible, but reversing it is only legal on kenku that have been freed from slavery, and it is often prohibitively expensive.

Kenku Names

Kenku follow slave naming conventions, with descriptive names. Because kenku are often house-slaves their names tend to be more metaphorical and evocative than those slaves used as soldiers.
