Lizardfolk

The lizardfolk live in the wetlands of Seventeenth Province, the only area of the Continent not under Celestial rule. For more than sixty years they have waged a war of attrition against Imperial forces, using guerilla tactics to resist an army ten times the size of their own. Because of this, lizardfolk are rare in the Empire. When they do live within Celestial borders, they are either casteless refugees fleeing war, or they are war prisoners who have been made slaves. Enslaved lizardfolk are usually forced to work in prison conditions, as miners, factory workers or builders. They are kept distant from centres of Celestial civilization. Their religion--illegal as all non-celestial religions are--follows an unusual pantheon of vengeful and hostile gods, whom they believe must be constantly appeased.
Lizardfolk look similar to their Western cousins, the dragonborn, but they have adapted to live in wetlands. They tend to be multicoloured rather than of a single tone, and they have webbed hands and feet to aid them in traversing the water. They have little concept of gender, and it is impossible to tell a Lizardfolk's sex merely by looking at them.
