Triton

The amphibious Triton rule a vast swathe of underwater territory stretching from the Western Continent's eastern shore to the Empire's western border, meaning it is the largest nation in the world by size. Their country is a stratocracy, ruled by a military junta that has been in place for over a millennia. A war with the Empire in the mid-Eighteenth century ended in a stalemate; the singing of the Pearl Pact led to peace, and the two nations are now firm allies.   With the singing of the Pearl Pact came the transfer of some underwater territory to the Empire, which retains much of its triton population. Other triton have emigrated out of the underwater territory and into the Empire's coastal regions. Under the Autonomous Principle outlined in the Pearl Pact, these populations must respect Celestial rule, but they are considered Casteless and are allowed some level of legal and political power amongst themselves. The Triton representative to the Empire, known as the Stratocratic Emissary, is the only non-aasimar permitted in the war chambers of the Celestial palace. Their language, Primordial, is the official language spoken in underwater Celestial territories, as Common is not pronounceable in water without the use of magic.   Triton have a height range similar to humans, webbed ears, and sharp teeth and nails. Tritons from coastal populations have skin in turquoise and green, whereas those from deeper water tend towards darker shades of blue, grey and purple. Their hair can be almost any colour imaginable, although blue and green are most common, with pink and orange shades occasionally appearing in coastal tritons. They are also adaptational, and their biological features change depending on whether they are on land or underwater. Adaptations occur over the course of about half an hour submerged or on the surface. Water-adapted tritons have large pupils, webbing between their fingers and toes, colourful fish-like markings on their skin, and gills. They are able to breath air while adapted like this through their skin, as frogs do, but they must remain moist to do so. Land-adapted tritons lose these features and form lungs; these lungs are smaller relative to other races, and tritons breathe abnormally fast by human standards. Despite this, even land-adapted tritons require ready access to water to be comfortable and normally have to return to their water-adapted versions at least once a day to prevent health issues; for this reason many tritons living on land sleep submerged in water.

Triton Names

Triton living on land must adapt their Primordial names to be pronounceable in air. Surnames are not traditional in the Stratocracy but are common in land populations, where a family will usually adopt a random first name as a last name when they emigrate.   Example Female Names: Heilani, Kala, Loana, Malia, Nani   Example Male Names: Keoni, Akamu, Noa, Pika, Tane   Example Neuter Names: Kai, Lei, Ulani
