The Volatility of Science and Magic

"So... you're telling me it's a bad idea to power this industrial furnace with fireballs for an extended period of time?"
- Grehearth's Industrial Experimental Division Member, Moments before an explosion

Science and Technology: The Early Stages

Science and Technology are predominantly known to have boomed in the past hundreds of years in Iberia. Led by the industrial lands of Grehearth, much of the world's expansion of the industry is brought about by this region. However, there have been many incidents as of late that have been brought to light. Minor incidents in the electrical lamps have been known to flicker occasionally in magically inclined regions, and various other trinkets that have been developed in recent times have slowly failed too. This is why many arcane locations in Grehearth utilize candles and magically inclined equipment to power or fuel their light sources. While this issue was relatively mild at first, ongoing documentation and development have led this to great concern for future prospects.

The Divide between Science and Magic

Incidents such as the meltdown of an Industrial Factory, the destruction of a clockwork ship, and more led to concerns. Many have come to the realization that the usage of technology and magic are inherently opposed. Sources of power that once powered candles, kindled fires, frozen foods, and preserved objects are no longer possible in these new technologies. Actions such as this have caused many mages to refuse work with scientific endeavors and have led many of their communities to be ostracized as well.   Furthermore, the development of powerful energy sources that are limitless has led to significant issues, and are highly restrictive. The act of powering advanced engines has led to the destruction and loss of many engines and even lives.   Such examples can be seen in the attempts that have been made to utilize Fire Elementals to eternally power steam engines. All of which has led to their destruction. Whether it sputtered out, broke down, or melted down, all have led towards failure. The elementals would erratically be unstable and led to unusual incidents where they may have exploded in a sea of fire, or garnered strength to wipe out a facility on their own.   They realized the failures were due to all the devices interfering with one another due to being in proximity, and have opted to create centralized generators and cabling to fuel them instead, reducing the points of magic drastically.   Few understand why this occurs, and while further research is being expanded upon to circumvent this issue, it is still an ongoing investigation.
