The Festival of Blood and Souls
The Festival of Blood and Souls is a yearly event observed in the City of Nithrikmar. It is a month long celebration symbolizing the strength of undeath and it's power over the living. The citizens honor this ideal by feeding upon the living for their blood, lifeforces, and memories.
Execution
There are many facets to the dark festival ranging from hunts and rituals to competitions and award ceremonies. This festival is also the only time where select memebers of the living are allowed to enter the city unharmed (being allowed to leave alive may be an entirely different matter).
The hunts are a competition that serve as a way to procure "food" and sacrifices for the feasts and rituals held throughout the celebration. The participants are assigned a judge (usually an incorporeal undead of some sort) to chronicle each individual's hunt and make sure all rules are followed. The hunters use the portals of Nithrikmar to travel to and from distance lands in search of prey to capture and to submit for judgement. There are different categories that are awarded yet the same capture may take awards in multiple categories. These categories can change festival to festival but the standard ones include largest, most unique, most influential, longest hunt, and most total captures.
There are only three types of rituals performed during the Festival of Blood and Souls. The first type of ritual is the sacrificing of the living to dark deities or other evil entities of power in exchange for personal power or protection of the city. The second type is for those who seek undeath by sheading the restraints of the living. The third and most important form of ritual performed happens only during the centennials of the festival. This ritual is a sacrificial ceremony that requires one of two things to happen the first is theĀ sacrifice of no less the thirty commoners. The second is the sacrifice of a person who has achieved a significant level of power. Thees sacrifices are made to the wards of Nithrikmar that need to be recharge every one hundred years
