Cartaries

Cartaries are hovering carts supported by one or more levitors. These carts natively move slowly, but by pushing magical power into them or pulling them with creatures can cause them to move faster. They are used frequently by traders, mobile shops, and the military. As the levitors reduce the force required to move them, it is possible for a single horse to pull a cart weighing 5 times that they normally would be able to. This makes them especially valuable for transport of heavy objects.

Common Uses

Several companies of express travel have cropped up with fast horses and large cartaries. This has improved the travel time between various towns and cities. They tend to hire guards for the more bandit stricken routes, but are generally considered safe and reliable.   A few mobile restaurants exist on cartaries and they are particularly popular in Soramizu. Hedge wizards who charge Tions are another common user of cartaries and often use it as their home as well as shop. It is said that a few used by wizards are bigger on the inside so it is actually a quite comfortable accommodation.   Militarily, siege engines are often built on top of heavy caraties. Mobile Ballistas, fireball cannons, and troop transports are not uncommon. A few have been retrofitted with flight capabilities and are pulled by teams of Opinicus.

Recent history

After the failure of Mystic Engines and the shutting down of Portal Networks, Cartaries became especially used for many types of transport. These days; broken, run-down and partially working cartaries are common and has dropped the cost of finding partially working ones.

Game Mechanics for 5th Edition

Cartaries can be driven by the use of any vehicle based proficiency (land, water, air or void). Using spells to propel cartaries instead of animals is based on the strength of magic. Spells applied will run the cart forward for 2 hours per spell slot used. (1st level for slow, 2nd level for medium, 3rd for fast). If the driver has magical capability they can push the single spell slot to last 8hrs but takes a point of exhaustion.   See PHB for overland travel speed. Given the hovering nature of the cartaries it is possible to move stealthily at a medium pace when not using animals, additionally the difficulty of tracking hovering vehicles imposes disadvantage.
