The Roving Fortress
The people of Utstyrstad have deep roots in the nomadic culture of the cragland goliaths, and their military buildings have taken some inspiration from this. In the early days of the city's history, Utstyrstad often found itself under siege by multiple armies. Though they were capable of defending themselves for prolonged periods, they knew that it wouldn't be long before they ran out of resources and were forced to give up their city. So, they developed a bit of technology that would allow them to take the fight to their enemies without leaving the safety of their walls. Enter the Roving Fortress. Through a system of water powered gears and pulleys and just the slightest bit of rune-magic, the goliaths enabled their towers to uproot themselves and walk upon tall, slender legs of cold-iron. Once mobilized, the towers could locate enemy supply lines and stop a siege months early. It wasn't long before the fear of castles with steel spider legs drove the enemies of Utsyrstad to stop attack entirely, sending peace treaties to the city. Some of those treaties were accepted. Others were not. One cold night, in the year 655, an entire city of mechanized buildings marched toward Yvolta*, crashing through its walls and leaving the city in ruins, only stopping once the city's leaders all lay dead. This was the last anyone has ever heard of a war with the Ember-folk.
It is widely known these days that Lomar The Scribe was heavily involved with the original design for the Roving Fortress(hence its simple name, as he never was one for complexity). Though Lomar's journal has been made public since his disappearance in the ash sweep, information such as this pertaining to military advancements has been mostly omitted.
*Yvolta was once the capital of Carrim'tor, which these days is better known as Teglyn.
