5. The Desecrated Shrine

General Summary

The party descended under the zigurrat, meeting some low-level demons hanging around the entrance. Despite their invisiblity and poison stingers, they fell quickly to the cleric's holy magic.   At the foot of the stairs, they found a shrine to an ancient paladin named Lysandre. However, as they progressed further inside, they found that the heart of the shrine had been desecrated - dark energies boiled in what used to be a clear well. After clearing it, they noticed treasure glittering at the bottom.   It took them a few trips, but they took the time to dive for the ancient longsword and breastplate at the bottom. Broken furnishings and debris around the shrine, however, indicated that several other treasures which once stood there had been stolen. The whole place stunk of demons.   They conducted a thorough search on their way out, uncovering some spell scrolls and some change that had once been offerings to the paladin's memory before returning to the surface.   They made their way back to town, where the townfolk were grateful for their assistance as the Naiad caused the river to flow normally again. The ferrymen prepared to reopen for business as the party returned to the inn for some much-needed rest.
