9. Up in Flames

General Summary

As they exited Hobb's Hollow, Caelynn observed that they were now in the region mentioned on one of the Wanted posters they had seen back at the trading post. It was the domain of a gigantic boar, whose hide would fetch a handsome price in the next settlement.   The party agreed they could use the funds, since the citizens of Hobb's Hollow hadn't been able to give them much of a reward for their efforts. They tracked the boar through the countryside, and eventually found it, rooting in a farmer's field. They decided to attack by surprise, and flung several ranged spells at it, dealing a lot of damage before it even turned around.   Some of that damage happened to be fire damage, and before they knew what was happening, a good portion of the very dry, midsummer field was ablaze. Without any magical ability to bring rain or water, the party fled into the forest, the fire speeding along behind them!

Notes

This was the last session. As an inexperienced DM, I used real-life rules for the temperature and spread rate of a brush fire, and could not figure a way for the PCs to not die instantly. This, combined with scheduling issues, meant that the campaign unfortunately petered out.   It remained a valuable learning experience. While I would continue to struggle against over-focusing on details, Against the Demon Horde (Kragmarr Continued) helped me find my feet as a DM, and I'll always look back fondly on it for that reason.
