He hires folk from the “Great Rift” district as his employees. They are willing to work hard for a day's pay and don't complain. He pays reasonable wages. He doesn't pay opulent wages but also does pay barebones. He has been known to pay his loyal employees for days they are actually sick, something that is uncommon, even in the nicer parts of Neverwinter. Newer, unproven employees don't get this benefit. He is also harder on his unproven employees than those who have worked for him for years.
Reason being: With the newfound wealth and prosperity of Neverwinter, everyone is trying to move up and to a better life (trying to get out of the rough, dirty work). This makes it hard for Rainier to train and keep good workers that will stay more than 6 months. If they stay and rough it thru the first 6-8 months of Rainier riding them hard, they gain his trust & respect (which grows with time).
He also finds riding the new hires hard helps to weed out the wheat from the chaff. “Give 'em and inch and they'll take a mile; they need to earn that mile”: he finds it's a good way to sort out the honest folk from those that are looking for an easy ride.
