Dust Lung is a condition caused by inhaling the dust found on the floor of the Dust Sea. It leaves those affected by it with a long-lasting harsh cough and sore throat.
The disease comes into effect after breathing in a notable amount of the dust found covering the floor of the Dust Sea. The severity will vary depending on how much dust was inhaled, though even small amounts can cause long-lasting effects.
Its symptoms will come into effect almost immediately, these include a dry and painful cough, difficulty breathing and a dry mouth. In cases where the affected has breathed in minimal amounts, these effects will generally clear within a few days of getting out of the Dust Sea, though they will be left with a cough for a long time afterwards. In particularly serious cases, it may cause bleeding in the throat and lungs which can eventually cause death if it isn't treated quickly.
In minor cases, it is often more effective to wait until the initial symptoms have faded then counter the remaining effects with cough syrups and other soothing medicines until it subsides on its own.
In more serious cases, it is often more effective to perform surgery to remove dust from the respiratory system before it has a chance to get more serious. In some cases, it is most effective to perform a lung transplant, though this isn't common and is only used when the dust has caused irreparable damage.
A majority of people will survive it, even if the recovery is long and unpleasant. It can cause occasional deaths in serious cases, though this is usually only if it isn't treated quickly enough.
Those with weaker respiratory systems such as Melapi are prone to much more serious effects from it.
The best way to prevent it would be to stay out of the Dust Sea altogether, though in cases where it is unavoidable, face protection is your best course of action. While masks and other protections will handle it alright, it will never be 100% effective so it is best to minimise time exposed to it.
