King Ceolwulf
King of Mercia
King Ceolwulf the second is the current ruler of Mercia, though some say not for long. He ascended to the throne as a puppet for the occupying Danish forces when his brother Burgred fled the country on a well-timed Pilgrimage to Rome. Ceolwulf managed to outwit the both the Danes and Wessex by playing them off one another but has also presided over the decline of his Kingdom from a major power to little more than a minor partner to Wessex's power.
King Ceolfwulf is a headstrong old man who has a hard time accepting the council of others. He hopes for change and struggles against it but many of his Ealdorman have already deserted him or begun to ignore his commands, busy dealing with their own problems.
King Ceolfwulf passed at the battle of Wrexham, falling in the shield wall while he attempted to rescue one of his Thegns who had fallen in combat. He took a blow that rendered him mortally wounded and he passed shortly after the battle concluded in victory.
