Kingdom of Wessex

Wessex has been the rising power in England for the last three generations, building up its power slowly as it annexed its neighbors in Surrey, Sussex, Kent, and Essex. Likely it would have continued this trajectory if not for the arrival of the Great Heathen army.   As the dominant Anglo-Saxon kingdom of southern England, the forces of Wessex provided the isle’s primary resistance against the incursions of the Great Heathen Army. The country was not spared the ravages of the Danish forces, but instead was able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat when King Alfred retreated into the swampy fens to regroup his forces.   Since the war, the men of Wessex have not been idle but have been constructing new strongholds known as burrs to act as a safe haven for local people from attack. These fortified settlements give enough time for townspeople and farmers to fend off attackers from their walls and wait for relief forces. They do not believe the war is over, and face raids from their Danish neighbors.
