Kingdom's End Chapter 7 - Forgotten Places Report

General Summary

The Warband headed to the village of Isuer, located just outside the old ruins of the Roman town Isurium. The village was quite small, no more than a dozen houses and a Church and dead quiet as the group arrived shortly before nightfall. Since the request for aid came from the local parish, the Warband went to the church only to find that they practiced a strange variation of the Christian Faith. The Church was dedicated to a local saint, Marc'heg Gwer, or more commonly known as the Green knight Gwain. Father Marshall informed the group that a creature had emerged from the woods and was attacking the villagers and it had arrived shortly after a conjunction of stars four months earlier and a trip to the Roman ruins by another warband. The warband had returned, but soon after the spectre had arrived and killed them. Ketilløgh, the sorceress, determined that this conjunction would have been a magical point of power and might be used by someone to awaken the creature. She asked if there were any practitioners in the area, and one of the younger priests said there was a man named Kelton in town.   The Warband decided they would talk to Kelton in the morning, but the specter appeared late in the night. The creature was not what they expected, an undead monstrosity called an Orc. He was clothed in Roman armor and his flesh, where visible, seemed to be a tough leather. He was unable to enter the church grounds, so the group took the time to parlay with him using old Briton which the creature seemed to know. They found out he was a guardian of a sort, doomed to follow his oath until the sun boiled the seas and the sky rained ash. He did not trust them, and without being able to convince him, the warband decided to attack.   The attack went poorly, the group forced to retreat after a few blows struck. They found he was able to strike fear into their hearts and many lost the will to fight. They retreated to the church and refused to leave despite the Orc’s cruel words about their courage.   The next morning, they departed to see Kelton, who they found on the edge of the village. He was an older man who was in the clutches of leprosy despite his skill as a trained healer. He was a pagan who despised the Church not for their religion, but instead their hypocrisy. Huw and Ketilløgh convinced him of their intentions and he revealed the other warband had returned with treasures from their time at the Roman ruin, and that the creature had arrived a few nights later and slaughtered them. Each night he returned to the village and searched each house, attacking those that would stand against him. He even searched Kelton’s home, but did no harm to Kelton as he didn’t wish to resist. The only place he could not search was the Church. Kelton also told them that Father Marshall was an ambitious man that collected relics that he believed were holy so that he could further his own ambitions within the Church.   The Warband returned to the Church and distracted the priests so that Aldwyn could search its back rooms. He discovered that Father Marshall was wealthy and had a roman artifact hidden in his room. But Aldwyn was a religious man and refused to steal from the church, much to Huw’s chagrin, and left the artifact only reporting its existence to the warband.   Still not convinced they should confront Father Marshall, the warband decided to go to the ruins to gather more information.
