Kingdom's End Chapter 8 - The Old Temple
General Summary
Still in the village of Isuer, the warband decided to spend the morning examining the old ruins near town. Unfortunately, none of them were experts on the old Romans, so upon their arrival they decided to search the area for signs of the previous adventurers passage. They found several excavated areas, including the entrance to an underground temple. Remembering that it was mentioned they had found a sanctum, they lit their torches and decided to go inside.
Once inside the temple, they discovered that it seemed to be a place of magic with roots hanging from the ceiling above where they knew no trees were located. They also found traps designed to deter robbers that were powered by no source they could find. While disabling these traps, one of them made too loud a noise and attracted the attention of some inhabitants.
Creatures that seemed more rat than man quickly approached lead by a ram headed creature. A fierce battle ensued with blade, axe, and shield clashing in the dark. The warband was injured but came out triumphant. Their enemies turned into water in front of their eyes and seeped into the floor. This caused many to call out the lord’s name in vain.
They found the sanctum of which the adventurers spoke, a doorway to an Arx guarded by a stone statue. The statue had several items on pillars in front of it and there seemed to be no way past without solving the riddle. Slowly the warband gathered the required clues and were able to open the entrance to the Arx.
Upon its opening, the portal to the Arx shuddered and the ghostly warrior appeared. He claimed that he guarded the Arx to allow none to enter and none to leave. The missing items from the Arx were propping the door of the arx open, forcing him to be more vigilant and to keep creatures inside. The warband realized that the items stolen were from the Arx itself and offered to return them if the warrior would tell them what remained outstanding. After convincing the warrior of their intentions, he revealed that the item Aldwyn had found in Father Marshall’s study was the only item left. The warband was divided on stealing from a priest or a church, a few worried about the state of their eternal soul. Ketilløgh asked the warrior if he could help, and the warrior offered to kill the priest if they could get him to come outside during the night. The warband decided that wasn’t a good plan after some debate, they decided instead to risk their soul by going back to town and steal the missing artifact.
