Dead Horse

The Shanties Origins are not 100% but it refers not to a physical horse but a Sailors first Months pay advance given to them for time at sea. The song is born of Sarcasm as Sailors often had their first months pay advanced to them upon hire. This pay was often Spent, Lost or Frittered away to the Fellow who landed him the job on the ship or because it was gambled away to shipmates or drink before they actually sailed. Because the Sailors Advance was now gone they often referred to it as a "Dead Horse" and they did not have any pay until after one month at sea.   1. The ship recovers d10 HP and any misfired cannons are repaired.
