Helig's Promise

"Though I rest, I shall not pass. I shall return at my time at last."
— Helig's Final Words as translated from Giant
The story of Helig's Promise is one that has been passed down for many generations since the fall of the once-great Giant King. While many consider the tale to be just a legend, there are some within the religious community who believe it to be a warning of the malovioent Giant King's eventual and pre-determined return.

Summary

While there is not basis in when, the story has remained unchanged for much of the history since the fall of the Age of Giants and the Black Century. The story goes that, as a diviner, Helig saw his own demise rapidly approaching but also saw that Morcar Giantslayer was not his slayer.   It is said that Helig, driven mad by his own visions, was not killed by Morcar, but instead the two made a deal and Morcar, using the great blade Giantslayer, put Helig into an eternal sleep so he may recover from his damnable visions and become wise once more. While this is mainly spoken amongst the Goliath people, humans, dwarves, and others have taken to the story and use it as a warning of looking too deeply into things. While, to them, the legend is merely a story, some Goliath cults in the area have taken to the idea that the tale is real and have attempted to bring Helig back from the dead using dark, fey magics.

Historical Basis

The Historical basis lies around the myth and legend around Giant's Rest and, perhaps more importantly, Morcar Giantslayer and his personal war against Helig the Mad. Becase of this, the legend is believed to have formed some time after his death at the hands of Morcar and not to have been part of the Great Legend of "Morcar Giantslayer and Helig the Mad".
