Abnormality Objects

How Abnormal is an Abnormality Object?

Abnormality Objects are strange and unexplained items that suddenly appear within The Delta Space, as if from nothing, and often hold strange powers within them. Most often these items seem to suddenly appear when out of sight, being found in places where no objects were before. A wrench, found on the bench of a ship mechanic, where mere moments before there was none, a lead pencil in a drawer of utensils, or even stranger yet, large abstract statues found on an unexplored moon or asteroid. But, in rare cases, an Abnormality Object has been seen suddenly blinking into existing, often accompanied by a strange popping or clapping sound, in front of a stunned witness.    Each of these objects while vastly different in form share a common trait though, they each have an ability gifted to them by whatever strange energy created them, ranging from the mundane to the wondrous. As such, these Abnormality Objects have become one of the most sought-after pieces in all of Delta Space. With examples like The Autotranscriber Pencil and The Long-Range Rotary Telephone being fought over by wealthy corporations and their teams of Abnormality Hunters.

Unique Items of Wondrous and Mundane Power

All of these strange items possess odd powers, most range in often mundane effects; ranging in effects from relatively useful, to the absolutely absurd. Some of the more common Abnormality Objects that have been found that fall into the category of relatively useful are the ones that simply glow, usually upon some sort of reaction. Utensils that glow upon being struck upon a specifically metal surface, or the book that illuminates when its pages are turned.   Then come the absurd, like the wrench that blows kisses at its user whenever you tighten a bolt with it. Or the chair that doesn't enjoy being sat upon so it scoots to the left an inch or two whenever someone tries. These latter absurd objects are typically not overly appreciated and are regarded as nuisances, some of the more offensive ones are even locked away - one example being a stuffed monkey plush whose eyes don't ever leave your gaze, it was so unsettling that its owner actually paid to have it locked away in a vault. The former owner apparently still has nightmares over its freaky gaze.   The other category of Abnormality Object is much rarer and holds incredible and potent powers. These Abnormality Objects are often the ones fought over, commonly by large corporations that send out teams of Abnormality Hunters whose sole purpose is to locate and retrieve these powerful items by any means necessary. These hunters, often have deep pockets, being funded by some of the large Corpos, and receive massive bounties upon retrieval of their quarry. They are by no means a force to be trifled with, and their arrival typically means some nasty, and often bizarre, shit is about to go down.    One example of an Abnormality Object that has been fought over and traded hands many times in its existence is The Autotranscriber Pencil. An archaic-looking writing tool that seems to use lead, of all things to, to write on surfaces. This pencil can translate any language it sees or hears within a few feet. It scrawls the translation in the air, leaving strange floating text that sparkles in the air for a few minutes before fading, giving the reader a short amount of time to read or transcribe the text themselves using their own computer pad or journal.   Another example is the mysterious Long-Range Rotary Telephone, which again resembles an archaic item, in this case, a telephone of a design from long ago. Its name gives away its ability to communicate with others over vast distances, even being able to connect live communications from the other side of the galaxy. A potent power as long-range live communications are currently not possible, only short pre-recorded messages can be sent long-range and the time it takes to reach its destination depends on the distance travelled and can often take days or weeks to arrive.

Surprisingly Numerous

Despite their strange powers and unknown origins, Abnormality Objects are quite prevalent within The Delta Space. Though unfortunately, most of those fall within the category of the mundane or annoying. No one truly knows what the ratio is from mundane to wondrous is, but the number of known useful or powerful Abnormality Objects range in the thousands if not less, whereas the mundane or annoying range in the hundreds of thousands if not higher. And when you compare that the expanse of the entire Delta Space those numbers truly aren't very high.   Though this doesn't stop people from hunting them down. Many people have even committed their lives to hunt them down in the hopes of finding the much rarer category of actually useful Abnormality Objects. These hunters often travel the galaxy in small groups collecting as many of these objects as they can and then selling them to individuals, or even better to corporations that have the money to purchase the higher value Abnormality Objects. The more successful ones have even found themselves as permanent employees of the Corpos with deeper pockets, and make extraordinary money off their bounties.

The Variance

It is heavily rumoured that the largest, and arguably the most powerful, Abnormality Object is in fact the space station known as The Variance. An immense diamond-shaped space station that was discovered during the initial chartering of The Delta Space. Its inner dimensions are seemingly endless and often shift and change as time goes on, while on the outside it never seems to grow from its current size.

Pretty weird that non natural objects pop up out of nowhere. Very abnormal indeed :p But that rotary phone does sound like quite a handy object with that live communication. I guess that is something a nation would want to get their hands on.

Thanks for your comments! I really appreciate them. Yeah, I really wanted to inject a feeling of the New Weird genre into this world. The Abnormality Objects are my attempts at that. And honestly, the "explanation" behind these items are still a mystery even to me haha.
