Black Resin

Black resin is a kind of plastic which can be produced from the sap of the wrath trees that are a part of the dark flora of Carafon.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

Black resin has some highly desirable properties which make it a very useful. When hot, the resin is malleable and can be moulded into many forms, but once it has cooled it hardens into a tough, durable and water resistant material which has proven to be extremely useful.

History & Usage

Industrial Use

Carafon alchemists have deployed the resin to manufacture water pipes, to make bends and joints, far better than those made in metal or stone and to line and caulk the rocky channels that carry water throughout the city where they are most vulnerable to leakage.   Without black resin the city's impressive hydrological systems for the delivery of drinking water and the processing of sewage, would be impossible.

Refinement

Black resin is produced by an alchemical transformation, which takes place when the sap of the wrath tree is heated and combined in the proper proportions with aqua fortis (an acid also used in the pruification of gold and silver), fullers earth and "blue salt", a toxic mineral often found closely associated with the Carafon Blue sapphires, being a mixture of common salt with aluminium and titanium oxide impurities.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Owing to the relative scarcity of the substances needed to make it, the specificity of the location where they are found, and the secretive habits of the alchemical mages who understand the process, black resin is hardly ever found outside the Cavern City of Carafon, except in very small samples as a curiosity. Internally, successive Tyrants of Carafon have always paid the alchemists well for their services and the engineering products they produce, knowing that their work is vital to the health of the city.
