Mist Wolves

Travellers in the realm of the Autumn Country may encounter mist wolves. These insubstantial creatures hunt in packs within the cover of banks of low lying mist. They kill their prey by entering the lungs as the victims breathe, then selectively encasing each alveoli in targetted drops of moisture. In effect, their victims are drowned in the mist, unable to access the oxygen in the air, even though they are not technically under water.
To fight off an attack of mist wolves, the mist must be disrupted with fire and if a flow of air can somehow be created that can also help to disperse them.

• The Borderlands
