The Great Forgetting

An alternative name for the Season Of Innocence, and used interchangably with it. The name emphasises the wilful loss of historical records from earlier times and the active antagonism towards the making and keeping of any contemporary chronicles to memorialise the past. Enormous areas of collective memory were lost forever at this time, including the details of why the Great Forgetting itself ever came to pass. Technological and scientific skills, too, became radically simplified although the Order of the Silent Word was permitted to transmit some basic knowledge of the arts and crafts of human life in a secret library, supposedly restricted to purely practical instruction.
