Utterland
Utterland is a sub-continent in the southern hemisphere of the world of the Lost Retreat.
Localized Phenomena
The deafeningly loud noise known as the Voice of the World, which emanates from a location called the Throat of the World on Vox Island off the south and eastern coast of the mainland, is of overwhelming importance to the region, profoundly affecting human societies and the evolution of local animals and their auditory capabilities.
The Voice of the World makes permanent settlements difficult in the east, although local adaptations have compensated for the unwelcome sound to a certain degree. West of the land of Bellow, the noise attenuates to tolerable levels, and the humans and animals that live in North and South Hox can endure it without long term ill effects. Non natives, however, may still find the sound irritating and unpleasant, especially when the wind blows from the east.
Climate
Utterland is a generally cold region with long winters and short summers. Snow is common, particularly in the south.
Fauna & Flora
Animals on Vox Island have evolved to lose their sense of hearing, since the proximity to the Voice of the World makes it useless. In the country of Bellow, an unusual species of semi-humans known as the Bellowfolk have developed an expectionally loud way to project their deafening voices so that they can compete with the high level of background noise.
